Do What You Love….Love What You Do

by Wayne Booth

I want to share something with you that I’ve been thinking about a lot this last week. You know I get a lot of people calling and telling me that they want to be a dog trainer because they hate their jobs and they don’t like what their doing. They want to find something else that they can enjoy. You know it makes me realize that I am probably the luckiest man in the world because I love what I do, plain and simple. And like that old saying goes “if you love what you do you’ll never have to work a day in your life. That’s what the dog training business has done for me. I really sincerely love what I’ve been able to do all these years. If working with dogs is a passion for you, you can be in the same position where you can enjoy getting up every morning and doing what you love instead of getting up every morning and going to work.

And then in the last few years I’ve had the opportunity to teach people what it is that I do, and that I love so much. My programs have helped so many other people get into the same business and do the same thing. The great thing about our programs is that they teach you how to be a dog trainer without taking a long time to do it. People who learn to do this on their own without a dog training program find that it can take years to develop the techniques and learn the methods to make their business work properly. With our program you don’t have to do that. We have it all outlined for you so you don’t have to re-invent the wheel in other words. We have it all laid out for you step by step to create a successful business for yourself.

3 Ways to Grow Your Dog Training Business Online

by Wayne Booth

Using the Internet to grow your dog training business is a great way to build value and customers at very low cost, and become an “expert” along the way.

Three simple ideas I like a lot are the website, the newsletter, and the blog.

A website is a much needed item for any business today. Years ago we used the printed brochure to tell people about our business. They would call, we would give them some information and then they would ask if we would send them a brochure. Today our brochure is our website. We can change it as often as we like adding new information, changing prices and offering new services. The website is much cheaper than the brochure because we don’t have to keep printing new brochures every time we want to make a change.

The benefit of a free e-newsletter is it allows you to reach out to your audience without waiting for them to come to you. Effective newsletters are usually very short and have valuable current events information in them. People are so stressed for time that anything over a page in length, unless it is very specific to the reader’s interest, is too long. I think a two-paragraph newsletter every week is much better than a two-page newsletter once a month. Frequency is a winner, and giving people a way to link back to your site or phone number every week is a great strategy.

A blog allows you to go deeper, more personal, and to cover more subjects that your reader wants. The best part about a blog is the comments that your readers give – these will strengthen your core message and you learn faster what your reader/customer wants. You can always plug your blog in your newsletter and on your website. Linking to other blogs is also a great way to build traffic and value.

When you do a healthy combination of website, newsletter, and a blog, you will often end up with enough content to create a product you can sell, and even better a prospect list (your readers and listeners) who will buy it!

We will talk about how to create a prospect list in another article.

It Takes People to Have a Dog Training Business

by Wayne Booth

You may think that is a strange title but not really. One thing to consider when you are starting any business is whether there are enough people in your area who will use your business and make it successful. A dog training business isn’t any different.

Over the years I have taught students who went home eager to start their dog training business only to find that there was not enough dog owners in the area to support their new business. So…….you have two choices. You either need to move to a more populated area or get creative and figure out how to locate more dogs.

Let’s start with example #1. I had a student in North Carolina who could not find enough business in his small rural community. I instructed him get a local map and tell me how many towns were within a 30-45 minute drive from him. It turns out there were six. None of them were larger than his town. I proposed he visit the local veterinarian in each community, and leave his business cards for the vet’s clients. When he told them that he was a dog trainer who wanted to offer group class in their community, the local vets offered the use of their parking lots or grassy areas next to their clinic. Since he couldn’t get enough dogs to come to him, he did the next best thing… he went to them.

Quite often he not only did one class per evening but actually had two classes so it really made the drive worth his effort. He took a business that wasn’t making a good profit and turned it into a full time business making up to $200 an hour teaching group obedience classes.

Example #2 is a student of mine who lived in the country 35-40 miles from a large city and about 15 miles from a smaller but well populated community. This student not only offered obedience training but also offered boarding. As the business grew she also built a nice indoor-outdoor boarding facility to accommodate well over 60 dogs. The next growing spurt happened when they added detector dog training. They trained dogs for law enforcement including drug dogs and arson dogs. They sell these to law enforcement all over the country. They took a business that was located in a very rural area and turned it into a very profitable business.

So no matter where you are located there is a way to find enough business to make your business prosper. You simply have to be creative.
